Pytanie #1:

Career as an Actuary?

I received a Bachelor of Science in Economics with honors last December. I was only one class away from a minor in Mathematics...I took Calculus 1-3, Differential Equations, and other quantitative classes like Mathematical Economics, Econometrics. I want a career that pays well and one where I have the autonomy to control my advancement, so being an Actuary appeals to me. While I do not have all of the stats background I need, I am currently taking online exam prep seminars to augment my knowledge.

1. How much can Fellows of the CAS of SOA make? I have heard that with salary, bonuses, incentives it can total around $150,000.

2. Would you say this is a career field where I can control my advancement (by passing exams)?

3. Is this a career that has a great earnings/work ratio? High salary but 8 to 5 job once you pass exams...compared to a doctor who has a high salary but a lot of hours.

4. Will I be able to use my business knowledge in the actuarial field?

5. Is it true that this is a low stress job?

Pytanie #16:

Research shows Arabic challenges the left side of the brain more. Israeli scientists call Arabic complex?

Researchers from the University of Haifa in Israel say intricacies in Arabic script are so complex that it challenges the left side of the brain more.
The university's department of psychology and the Edmond J. Safra Brain Research Center for the Study of Learning Disabilities conducted a series of studies on why Arabic might be more difficult to learn than other languages.

Researchers tested the reading speed and accuracy of Arabic, Hebrew and English in adults and children. They also tested the reading speed and accuracy in the three languages with those whose native language is Arabic.
"The results have revealed that the right brain is involved in the reading process for English and Hebrew, but not for Arabic," the university said.

Previous research has found that the right hemisphere is not that good at distinguishing small details, so readers starting to learn Arabic have to learn to focus on small details, which is not natural to them, but could help them shift to their left hemispheres.

Now the researchers want to compare new and highly expert Arabic readers in the hope of finding out what their brains are doing when they look at letters. The left side of the brain is stated as the logical, thinking side. People who are left brain dominant are usually good with areas of Mathematics and Science.

Pytanie #19:

What if _anything_ did Leonardo da Vinci contribute to mathematics?

I asked this earlier on Science/Mathematics, but they seemed to be more about actual mathematics, than the history... So, I'm reposting here.

I often read endless adoring narratives of what a wonderful polymath da Vinci was. As having been a "scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist", (of course artist, sculptor etc.)

I have no issues with da Vinci's art chops. Mona Lisa wonderful. Last Supper great. What I take issue with is the mathematician and scientist etc.

I read math text books, and I find mention of Pythagoras, of Gauss, of Euler. I have _never_ _ever_ seen in an actual math book mention of anything mathematically related to da Vinci. My suspicion is that he didn't accomplish anything in math, and probably in any other scientific endeavor. But, in the interest of keeping it narrow, let's just talk about his contributions to mathematics. What if anything useful did Leonardo da Vinci contribute to mathematics? Or is the claim that Leonardo da Vinci was a great mathematician just so much bullsh*t, as I suspect?

A and B produce X and Y such that: A ( 120 Y in 1/2 day , 115 X in 1/2 day ) and B ( 120 Y in 1/2 day , 118 X in 1/2 day ). How can specialization enable the factory to produce more total output when both X and Y have to be produced. ( Please explain with mathematics- derive the ppc functions and digrams, assume linear relationships.) Help me please ..

Some suggestions for books on recreational Mathematics?

Recreational Mathematics? I didn't know what else to call it . I just finished, "Professor Stewart's hoard of mathematical treasures" and I enjoyed most of it, some of it very much. Any suggestions for further reading. I don't mind "pushing the boat a little further from the dock" , so to speak.

Pytanie #24:

What are the treatment options for Dyscalculia?

I think I may have Dyscalculia (for those of you who dont know exactly what it is its: Impaired ability to learn grade-appropriate mathematics) I checked the symptoms online and I have some of them. So anyway, are there treatment options for this disability? I've always struggled in math since 2nd grade, and even tutors didn't help. One on one with someone should help, but I just cant grasp the concept of numbers and formulas and all that. I am in college and I am learning elementary school math, and even that is hard for me to understand. So, anyone know what should I do? Do I need to go to a doctor, are there meds for stuff like this, or am I just going to be stupid in math forever??? Also, is there a test online I could take to see if I really do have Dyscalculia? And is it normal for adults to have this? Because online I only see articles about children having this problem. Thanks in advance!

Pytanie #25:

I have this "thing" for effeminate boys so is it cheating since they are mostly gay?

My hubby is about to deploy and he's far away. I currently live with my mother in law though my parents are nearby and intimately involved in my life. I think they don't trust me because my mother and mother in law told me I couldn't wear shorts to school anymore ( I attend a local college and I'm majoring in Mathematics). My mom and mother in law help out with child care and watch my daughter while I'm in school but insist that I be home by nightfall.

One time I met a boy when my hubby was away for his Basic and Infantry training (it lasted forever!! six months!!) and I met this cute gay boy in one of my classes. He and I became friends and study mates and soon we kissed and than other things happened. He was sooo cute and even though he is gay (note: I'm not trying to make a statement if gayness is inherited or learned but simply say that we did things together lol lol) and we wound up having sex (only a few times). I eventually admitted it to my hubby and begged his forgiveness and he forgave me. I told my hubby I only did it one time with this boy but actually did it three times. Oh when I say boy he's really an adult (young adult because the boy was 18 lol lol, I'm still 19 and will turn 20 next April 1st lol lol).

Anyway every time I see an effeminate boy I "fall in love". Most of them only want a man but what if I find another one like the one I cheated with. Oh he's still in my college and we say "hi" but he's in a relationship with a man so its cool plus he said he doesn't want to come between me and my husband.

I wish my husband was home because when he's around I NEVER even look at anyone else. When I cheated on my hubby I did it in a park nearby that had secluded pathways and one time in his car. I still had the rule about being home by dark than and was pregnant at the time so could not get pregnant plus the boy said he was clean because he said he only had sex with another boy in high school and had an examination after that.

Should I carry condoms in my purse or backpack "just in case" lol lol?

Pytanie #27:

I understand QM and I am 13 Read Please?

Ok, so I am going into 8th grade and I was talking to my new science teacher about QM and how it coincides with what people believe today and I asked him why QM can't describe marco events. He didn't know. So later in the conversation he asked me to explain what I knew about QM so I did. He was fascinated with what I knew about the subject and the next day my math teacher started talking to me about advanced mathematics and classes that are held at universities for people who understand as much as me. But the thing I don't get is how I understand QM when I am terrible at math. I got a D on the final last year, and straight Cs all four quarters. And for Science I got Cs on everything. So, why do I understand QM so well and why does it seem like some huge accomplishment for my school teachers?

Pytanie #31:

Is it true that evolution is only a theory because it hasn't been proven?

And not a law?

See, for example, the universal gas law, which was first a theory but now is a law derivable from statistical mathematics.

The order of priority in science is...

conjectures and hypotheses - low end of the scale

theory

corroborated or accepted theory

law - high end of the scale.

Notice how most definitions of the word "theory" do say its based on facts however, it is a theory do to being widely excepted not because it is proven.

Pytanie #35:

How to get over my sorrow of bad study habits that lead to bad grades catching up with me?

Particularly in mathematics - where I neglected to do any homework. I have aspergers, and I honestly won't blame it on that. I feel so bad. My parents are divorced, it's just my mom, my brothers and I (one of whom lost his job to the bad economy). My mom doesn't really know about my troubles/realize their impact. Last winter during my junior year transfer year I got a 0.0 grade in calculus. I didn't go to lectures, copied all the homework from the solutions manual and handed it in...it just goes on it makes me sick to think of what I did. And I thought that I was studying well enough.

GOD I WISH I COULD GO BACK. I am seeing a licensed psychologist. She is going to help me get some academic accommodations/see how my studying is going. This summer I have taken summer school/self-studied calculus to the bone I am so good at it. This dilemma just caught up with me so fast now that I'm older (20) and a little more mature. It's killing me inside out, and no one really knows what I am doing/thinking within my family. I am trying to bullshit my doctor to write me a letter to remove the grades (hardship withdraw). Get me a fresh start.

I also took physics and got a 1.6 = D and a 3.3 in history. So what this shows is that I am not doing well in quantitative courses that require the practicing of problems - something I am doing now. I would request a withdraw from all the courses, including history. To be fair. I had a bad quarter.

Look, I have made a 360 turn. I need a fresh start, how to obtain this beyond what I have done to fix this?

Pytanie #36:

What does this dream mean about the relationship between my father and I?

The dream might be kind of graphic for some people so heads up...It's not too much gore but if you're sensitive about that kind of stuff this is your warning.

Some background as to some things I think are important in interpreting the dream:

Both my parents have always been very kind and helpful and for the most part I think we all have a healthy family relationship. My father has always been kind to me and only wants the best for me (as most parents do). He has studied physics and thinks that with a strong background in physics and mathematics I will have a successful life. I started college not to long ago and am taking courses in physics/math. I am majoring in those subjects mentioned, but I think I am only doing it to please him and I personally would rather study something else. I also haven't yet told him I want to change my major (and it's not a major he will be thrilled about).

The dream is short, but for some reason I can't get it out of my head.

I am standing naked and I look down and see my testicles have been teared apart or something strange, but they are still attached by some shreds of flesh. (although it was just a dream I swear I could feel the pain). I look up and call for my father who is near. I ask him to get some sort of help, but he just kinda shrugs me off as if it was nothing to worry about. (like as if he were reacting to a scrapped knee or something). Then the dream ends with me looking back down and witnessing my testicles finally tear off and I see all the fluids and blood all over the floor at my feat. All the while my father not showing any sense of urgency, it was as if he were indifferent.

Pytanie #37:

University terminology: What's the difference between a department, a school, and an institute?

I know the department is the smallest unit of the three, but I wanna hear about their features in a little more detail.

Like for example, most universities generally have a Department of Economics for their econ degrees. But some have an entire School of Economics. As for Math, the University of the Philippines offers Math degrees under its Institute of Mathematics.

Pytanie #38:

How would you define geometry in your own words?

I have to write a paper for my Geometry class and in it I need to define Geometry in my own words...
Here is the books definition:
Geometry: The branch of mathematics that deals with the deduction of the properties, measurements, and relationships of points, lines, angles, and figures in space from their defining conditions by means of certain assumed properties of space.
How would you define Geometry in a simple way/your own words?
Any and all help appreciated! Thanks!
Also... Why do you think your definition is a good one? Thank you.

Pytanie #39:

Ramadan :: Stephen Hawking Says: God Did not Create Universe...WTH?!?

By Michael Holden Michael Holden – Thu Sep 2, 9:08 am ET
LONDON (Reuters) – God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book.

In "The Grand Design," co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking says a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, according to the Times newspaper which published extracts on Thursday.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," Hawking writes.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

Hawking, 68, who won global recognition with his 1988 book "A Brief History of Time," an account of the origins of the universe, is renowned for his work on black holes, cosmology and quantum gravity.

Since 1974, the scientist has worked on marrying the two cornerstones of modern physics -- Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which concerns gravity and large-scale phenomena, and quantum theory, which covers subatomic particles.

His latest comments suggest he has broken away from previous views he has expressed on religion. Previously, he wrote that the laws of physics meant it was simply not necessary to believe that God had intervened in the Big Bang.

He wrote in A Brief History ... "If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason -- for then we should know the mind of God."

In his latest book, he said the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting another star other than the Sun helped deconstruct the view of the father of physics Isaac Newton that the universe could not have arisen out of chaos but was created by God.

"That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions -- the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass, far less remarkable, and far less compelling evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he writes.

Hawking, who is only able to speak through a computer-generated voice synthesizer, has a neuro muscular dystrophy that has progressed over the years and left him almost completely paralyzed.

He began suffering the disease in his early 20s but went on to establish himself as one of the world's leading scientific authorities, and has also made guest appearances in "Star Trek" and the cartoons "Futurama" and "The Simpsons."

Last year he announced he was stepping down as Cambridge University's Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a position once held by Newton and one he had held since 1979.

"The Grand Design" is due to go on sale next week.

------------
What do you think?? Isn't it stupid for him to say that Allah did not create the universe?
----------

14.19 . Have you not seen that Allah has created the heavens and the earth with the right proportions? If He wills, He can remove you and bring ( in your place ) a new creation .

There are two meanings relevant to the subject of this article in the above verse. First, Allah praise to Him has created heavens and Earth with the right proportions, which is a reference to the perfect system of interrelationships between components of the universe.

The Earth is placed in a perfect position and distance from the sun in order for life to flourish and continue. Proximity and distance from the closest point to the sun on Earth (the equatorial region) has led to the variation of environments and climates, leading to the wonderful variation in the fauna and flora in the biosphere. The proportion of water in the planet(70%)is equal to the proportion of water.
@my friend: I hear about that, but it said he changed his views about God.

And yesterday I saw about Fake Scientists and all their not logical theories. And theory means: An unproven conjecture.

Pytanie #42:

What do I have to do to get into Northwestern?

This is my 3rd year in college and I'm a transfer student.
I'm 20 years old, with no breaks in school. I'm a Hispanic male and I've always wanted to go to Northwestern ever since I was a kid.
My high school stats were underwhelming. I had a 3.4 GPA, graduated 36/278 in a weak school and had a 1900/2400 on my SAT. (1180 Verbal)

I spent my first year of college at an average liberal arts school in NY. I had a 3.59 GPA there with 27 credits hours.
I had to come to my local community college because I didn't get the financial aid to go back to my first school and at CC I have a 3.83 GPA right now with 31 credit hours completed. The only non A-grade was a B- in General Chemistry, which explains why I don't have a 4.0 at community college.

I have OK extra curriculars. About 8 or 9 from HS and College. My most important one was that I was a member of my school's varsity tennis team at my first college. However, I'm not nearly good enough to play at a high division I level, but it's still an extra curricular I'm passionate about.

I am planning to double major in English and History when I transfer. I'm really not a Math or Science person. I just took General Chemistry cause I thought if I challenged myself it would look good if I could get an A in the class.

I got rejected by Northwestern last year, but I'm applying again cause I don't want to give up.
I'm taking 3 SAT Subject Tests in November (Literature, World History, U.S. History) because I never took them in HS and I've been told excellent SAT II scores tend to have more weight than SAT I scores at Northwestern.

I've taken classes all across the liberal arts curriculum. If admitted into Northwestern, I will have completed all of the distribution requirements and would be a junior.

My current semester schedule is:
EN101 Composition
HI102 Western Civilization II
HI201 U.S. History I
BS100 Human Biology
MA102 College Mathematics II

The last time I asked this question, someone told me that my 3.83 at community college will be looked down upon by Northwestern and that it will appear to them that I can't cut it at an elite university. That makes no sense to me because looking at Northwestern's WCAS distribution requirements, the SAME classes are offered at NU. I've done extremely well in them and minus General Chemistry and Political Philosopy (B), I'd have an even higher GPA, probably in the high 3.8 range.

I'm really concerned because some people have told me not to even bother applying because generally people who successfully transfer into Northwestern have perfect college 4.0 GPAs AND excellent HS records.

Would you give me any chance to get in? And thank you for taking the time to read this question. My whole life right now is about getting into NU somehow.

Do a lot of people go to law school for the wrong reasons?

a lot of people are too lazy to pursue a career in medicine

a lot of people can not understand the mathematics required to become an engineer/scientist

so for those who don't get math, they tend to think lets go to law school and hit the jackpot...only to find out that only those from the top half of their classes from the top 10 law schools are the only ones who get the high paying jobs right after graduation

Pytanie #44:

Please read the following completely, as I have been twisted and warped by one main thought?

I'm sorry if this might be too long...but I'll try to simplify it as much as I can.

-As an Asian-American, I set my own expectations high. I expect to do well in mathematics and science...I give my 100% and I almost never procrastinate when there is something involving science and maths.

Maybe I am overwhelming myself...but "I feel like" I NEED to be an Albert Einstein, or an Isaac Newton, or a Stephen Hawking...The reason why I feel like this is because I look around the world. China in particular...and it's amazing how at the age of 7-8 years old, they can already do multiplication...that involves decimals. They can answer problems fast and precisely. THEN, I look at older/more elder people. They have so much knowledge...and at my age of 15, I feel like I NEED to know as much as they do at my age. I know that is overwhelming...but I know that life is tough.

My dad has always told me, "Life will be more difficult at the beginning of your life. But if you apply yourself at a young age, life will become a little more smooth for you.") I just don't feel welcomed in this world anymore...I feel like I have no reason to be in this world. I feel like I don't deserve to have fun anymore. I am only 15...and my parents and some friends believe that I am putting basically a burden on my shoulder. I just ignore what they have to say because I just can't get the fact out of my mind.

I don't have any classes in higher level mathematics and science until 2nd semester (which isn't until mid-January). I try my best to try to get an overlook throughout the 1st semester and try to probably get a tutor to help me out with my mathematics. I've just lost the will to move on. My dream job is to become a virologist or a primary care doctor...But where I am right now, how can that possibly happen with my minimal knowledge of mathematics and science? All I basically know as a 15 year old only as as much as Algebra II and Biology...

Hopefully someone can understand and help me through this tough situation for me. I just don't want to be alive anymore...
Grades are not the reason, it's the overall big picture. There are billions of people that are just good and have had so much experience in mathematics and science...I just don't understand why I am not one of them. And I probably might "not" be one of them.
Let's just say that, I've been having this thought run through my mind all summer long.

"If I do not succeed in science and mathematics, I feel like I let down everyone that has made names for themselves in science and mathematics. I'm just a disgrace..."

I love learning science and mathematics...but my anxiety can sometimes get the best of me.

What is a good business degree to pursue?

I love everything about business, I love mathematics, I love crunching numbers, I love statistics, I love building budgets, and all that fun stuff..I want to go into a career in business, I'm aiming at Financial Planning, but I do not know much about the careers you can do with a business degree. Once I told my boyfriends family I was doing that instead of nursing (they are a family who work in health care) his dad immediately told me that I will not be able to do anything with a business career because the economy is so bad, why open a business? But to me, it doesn't seem that having a business degree is solely about starting your own business? That never crossed my mind, I wanted to be a financial planner.

So what all can you specialize in, in business? I was looking at Finance, but I know nothing about it, and I'm still doing my pre recs, so I have time, but I'm very organized, I like to have the whole plan before I do it.

Biology (actually math) help! Field of view/diameter question?

I was placed in an upper level biology course, so I am having a little trouble with some of the math aspects

If the resolving power of a microscope is 1 um (micrometer), will you be able to use the microscope to observe a bacterium whose diameter is 2000 nm?

Could someone explain the mathematics behind this for me?

Thanks!

Pytanie #48:

How wrong is British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking on his views about God?

GOD DID NOT CREATE THE UNIVERSE, SAYS HAWKINS

By Michael Holden Michael Holden – Thu Sep 2, 9:08 am ET
LONDON (Reuters) – God did not create the Universe, and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book.

Computer Science vs Mechanical Engineering vs Electronic Engineering?

Hey Everyone,

I'm a Computer expert changing majors. I'm looking into doing either Mechanical Engineering or Electronic Engineering.

Does Mechanical Engineering involve lots of physics and mathematics?

My strength is computing, business, mathematics and understanding advanced science conceptions, and I'm willing to take on physics within the Mechanical Engineering mathematics side.

Aerospace is what I'd love to specialize in within the Mechanical Engineering discipline.

So, any advises, I'm in Glasgow, United Kingdom, if that helps.

And the level of my study is: Scottish Higher National Certificate
